Webinar Title: Beyond Competencies: The Role of Character-Based Leadership in Medicine

Presenter: Jacqueline Torti, PhD, Western University

Biography: Dr. Jacqueline Torti is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine and a Scientist at the Centre for Education Research and Innovation at Western University. Dr. Torti holds a Ph.D. in Public Health Sciences and studies psychosocial elements of healthcare professionals' learning and practice environments. Her research explores how character and leadership influence teamwork and well-being among interdisciplinary healthcare teams.

Overview: Physician leadership is multifaceted, but leadership training in medicine is often not. Leadership education for physicians typically prioritizes cognitive skills, overlooking the broader, more nuanced aspects of leadership that are essential for modern healthcare environments. Character-based leadership is a conceptual framework that moves beyond cognitive competencies and articulates dimensions of character that promote effective leadership. The webinar will highlight insights from a comprehensive program of research around character-based leadership in medicine. These insights come from a systematic review of leadership training in post-graduate medical education, shedding light on the existing gaps and limitations in current educational approaches. Complementing this, findings from a qualitative study will highlight how character-based leadership transcends conventional paradigms in medical leadership, revealing dimensions that resonate deeply with the humanistic and relational demands of the profession. Together, these insights make a compelling case for embedding character-based leadership into medical education. This webinar will offer critical recommendations for both expanding and enhancing existing leadership training to shape future leaders in medicine.
