Webinar Title: Physician Grief: An Overlooked Aspect of Health Professional Well-being

Presenter: Dr. Sarah Burm, PhD, Dalhousie University

Biography: Dr. Sarah Burm, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University. A qualitative researcher, Dr. Burm’s research program critically examines the social, cultural, and ethical complexities inherent in advancing institutional and curricular changes within medicine. By listening closely to people’s stories, she investigates how these changes influence the professional identities and wellbeing of both physicians and learners. Her work has been funded by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and Nova Scotia Health. In 2022 she was awarded the Early Career Medical Educators Champion Award for her commitment to advancing the growth, success, and recognition of fellow early career medical educators.

Webinar Overview

Physicians face unique challenges that often prevent them from fully experiencing and processing their grief, a reality that became particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. In an effort to provide a more humanizing perspective on grief in healthcare, Sarah initiated an inquiry into the different types of losses that physicians encounter in the clinical environment. In this webinar, Sarah will discuss the often-overlooked issue of physician grief and the complex discourses surrounding death, dying, and loss. Sarah will challenge conventional ideas of grief, revealing the many forms it can take and discuss the risks and harms that ignoring or avoiding grief can have for those in medical practice and training.

Learning Objectives

After active engagement in this program/session, participants will be better able to:

  • Identify the unique challenges associated with expressing grief in medicine and why it often goes unaddressed;
  • Discuss the consequences of overlooking grief in medical education and practice;
  • Formulate a plan to promote grief literacy within their local contexts.
